How to compare Pilot Shirts/Aviation Uniform

When comparing different pilot and aviation shirts, there are several factors to consider, including:

  1. Material - Consider the type of material the shirt is made from, as it can affect the shirt's durability, breathability, and overall comfort.

  2. Fit - Look at the sizing chart for each shirt and compare it to your own measurements to find the right size. Also, consider the cut of the shirt, as some styles may be more fitted or loose than others.

  3. Features - Look for any unique features that may be important to you, such as wrinkle-resistant fabric, moisture-wicking technology, or additional pockets.

  4. Style - Consider the style of the shirt, such as whether it is a long-sleeve or short-sleeve, button-down or polo-style, or has any unique design elements.

  5. Brand reputation - Look at the brand's reputation for quality and durability. Read reviews from other pilots to see what they have to say about the shirt.

  6. Price - Compare the prices of different shirts to find one that fits your budget while still meeting your needs.

  7. Uniform requirements - If you need to wear a specific type or color of shirt for your uniform, make sure to check that the shirts you are considering meet those requirements.

By considering these factors, you can compare different pilot shirts and find one that meets your needs and preferences. Below is a list of the different brands of pilot/aviation shirts for review.

Short or Long Sleeve Pilot Shirts

When comparing long sleeve pilot work shirts to short sleeve pilot work shirts, there are several pros and cons to consider. The choice between the two depends on various factors such as the nature of the work, climate, personal preference, and company dress code. Here are some general pros for each type and personal pilot opinions for each type of pilot shirt.

Long Sleeve Pilot Work Shirt:

Pros:

  1. Better protection against sun exposure, hazards, and weather conditions.

  2. Conveys a professional appearance.

  3. Can be versatile by rolling up the sleeves or layering.

Cons:

  1. May retain more heat and be less breathable in hot weather.

  2. Slightly restricts arm movement.

  3. Requires more maintenance in terms of washing and ironing.

Short Sleeve Pilot Work Shirt:

Pros:

  1. Provides comfort in warm weather by allowing better airflow.

  2. Allows for greater ease of movement.

  3. Requires less maintenance.

  4. Has a more casual and relaxed appearance.

Cons:

  1. Offers less protection for the arms and shoulders.

  2. May be perceived as less formal in certain professional settings.

  3. May not provide adequate coverage for certain tasks or work environments.

Ultimately, the decision between long sleeve and short sleeve work shirts depends on factors such as the nature of the job, climate, personal preference, and company dress code.

Women Pilot Shirts

Finding women's pilot shirts can be more challenging compared to men's pilot shirts due to the historically male-dominated aviation industry. However, with the increasing number of women in aviation, there is a growing demand for specialized women's pilot shirts. While the availability has improved, it may still be easier to find a wider range of options for men's pilot shirts. Women pilots may need to explore dedicated aviation uniform providers or specialty retailers that cater to women's aviation apparel. It's important to consider individual airline dress codes and policies, which dictate specific requirements for pilot uniforms, including shirts, for both men and women.

Differences between Male and Female Pilot Shirts and Uniform

The main differences between women's work shirts and men's work shirts are typically related to fit, style, and design considerations. Here are some key distinctions:

  1. Fit: Women's work shirts are designed to accommodate the female body shape, with considerations for the bust, waist, and hip measurements. They often have a more tailored or contoured fit compared to men's shirts, which tend to have a looser or straighter cut.

  2. Sizing: Women's work shirts generally follow women's sizing standards, which include numerical sizes or lettered sizes (e.g., XS, S, M, L) that correspond to specific measurements. Men's work shirts usually follow numerical sizing based on neck and sleeve measurements.

  3. Neckline and Collar: Women's shirts often feature different necklines, such as V-neck, scoop neck, or button-down collars designed to accommodate various preferences and styles. Men's shirts typically have more standardized collars, such as point collars or spread collars.

The best material for Pilot Shirts

The best material for a pilot shirt can vary depending on personal preference, climate, and the specific requirements of the airline or organization. However, there are a few commonly used materials that are popular for pilot shirts. Here are some options:

  1. Cotton: Cotton is a natural fabric that is widely used for pilot shirts. It is breathable, comfortable, and provides a soft feel against the skin. Cotton shirts are generally easy to maintain and can be durable, but they may wrinkle easily and require ironing.

  2. Polyester/Cotton Blend: A blend of polyester and cotton combines the benefits of both materials. This blend often provides a good balance between comfort, durability, and wrinkle resistance. It can be more resistant to wrinkles compared to 100% cotton shirts.

  3. Performance Fabrics: Some pilot shirts are made from performance fabrics, such as polyester or nylon blends. These fabrics are designed to be moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and breathable. They offer enhanced comfort and are ideal for pilots in warmer climates or high-intensity flying environments.

  4. Stretch Fabrics: Pilot shirts made from stretch fabrics, often incorporating spandex or elastane, provide additional flexibility and ease of movement. These shirts are popular among pilots who prioritize comfort and freedom of motion.

It's important to consider the specific requirements and guidelines set by your airline or organization when selecting pilot shirt material. Some airlines may have specific regulations or preferences regarding the fabric type, color, and design of pilot uniforms.

Conclusion:

The decision on which pilot shirt to choose and use comes down to your own personal opinion. I personally use short sleeve however would opt for a long sleeve when I am operating in cool/cold destinations. When I buy uniform I try on all the brands as they do fit differently and made sure I like the fit and brand. When operating for an airline they will provide a specific tailor and brand. Its always a good idea to get a mix of short and long sleeve shirts then. I personally get mostly shirt sleeve and 1 long sleeve pilot shirt to use. I've used Van Heusen and crew out fitters for uniform before and they are both very good and would recommend.
